What do you install to use Sametime 8.5 ?

Category
Now that Sametime 8.5 is available, you might be confused by what you need to download and install to get certain capabilities.  Before you start though be sure to read the IBM Lotus Sametime Standard V8.5 Windows i5 Multilingual Quickstart Guide, also if possible for your first couple attempts I would suggest installing under VMware, and taking lots of snapshots as you progress, I can pretty much guarantee as some point you'll screw up and wish you could go back.  Also have lots of things to do whilst installing, there are times when you can spend 30 minutes looking at a progress bar.  I did some testing, and found I could install Domino and Sametime in approx 15 minutes and Sametime 8.5 always took at least two hours, just because of the time the installer takes to extract the files.  Also be aware this is not a single exe installer, you are going to feel like you are repeating steps over and over as you launch each servers installer, just be patient, and use the install documentation.

Anyway hopefully this table will help you decide what you need.

The number of servers depends upon the options you want.  The colour indicates minimum servers you will require, in reality many of these servers under load will be placed on additional machines.
Minimum 1 Machine
Minimum 2 Machines

Gravatar Image1 - Don't forget DB2 and also the Gateway. If you want SIP/SSL you then need the WAS Proxy component. At least in 8.5 the port conflict issues are resolved.

Gravatar Image2 - @1 You are totally right I forgot to put DB2 in there.. If you install the system console etc. the WAS are installed by the Sametime installers.

Gravatar Image3 - Can you install everyone on one box, with the exception of Domino and the community server?

Gravatar Image4 - Looks loke a big push for Sametime cloud solutions. I don' like it but if it sells then this is the way to go.

Gravatar Image5 - Would be great to know what a pilot/proof of concept scenario might be. For the Minimum on 2 machines, what can go on what?

Gravatar Image6 - I'm with Henning on this one! Businesses are wanting to take cost and complexity out of the data center, not add to it.

The problem with them moving to a hosted solution for chat and meetings is that when they go shopping for solutions, they might not end up with Sametime.

Gravatar Image7 - WAS?

Gravatar Image8 - WAS = Web Application Server

Gravatar Image9 - Hi Carl,

Please hack the Sametime page on IBM site and upload this post,

Gravatar Image10 - Actually, WAS stands for WebSphere Application Server (not Web Application Server).

Hmmm. It's all starting to look pretty formidable, is it not, particularly for very small Notes/Domino shops (with, say, 25 or 30 seats, no dedicated It staff, limited budget).

In such cases I wonder if the first table entry ("just IM") together with Pentos Sametime 2 Skype would work well enough (refer to { Link } ) since I get the impressions that smaller shops are not ideologically opposed to using products like Skype [with its proprietary security model that larger enterprises strive to avoid]. Any opinions on this?

Gravatar Image11 - @10 That is actually my biggest concern Tony.

As a small business myself, I currently have my Sametime server on a hosted server somewhere else so I get good bandwidth etc. Guess what at a minimum, Sametime has doubled my hosting costs as I need a minimum of 1 new hosted server.

I think this is where more small businesses will consider hosted meeting services, and right now, gotomeeting, webex etc. to me have stronger offerings than LotusLive.

Gravatar Image12 - @10: thanks

Gravatar Image13 - Confused. 2 machines or 2 domino servers running on 1 iseries?

Gravatar Image14 - As far as I know, if you want to use Sametime like you did up till now, you can install option 1 or option 2 and it will work just like it did in the past.
The question is, how long will IBM support that solution.

Gravatar Image15 - Carl,

Do you have instruction on how to install ST 8.5?

Gravatar Image16 - @15 It's in the Sametime Infocenter

{ Link }

I find it easier to install using the PDFs, which can be found here:
{ Link }

Be sure to put some time aside.

Gravatar Image17 - So there is no web client/iphone version of Sametime 8.5 without using all the Websphere/DB2 components. Too bad.

Gravatar Image18 - You have it wrong, on the proxy server side you will need another box but you only need to install the proxy server on it so that being the case you might be luck and get it to run on the ST box, not tried it but good news is you don't need an ldap or the SSC or a DB, it is truely stand alone.Emoticon

Gravatar Image19 - @18, I assume that is in response to @17.

The Proxy server is still a Websphere application, so yep doesn't need DB2, but does still need it's underlying Websphere server.

Gravatar Image20 - Thanks for the info !

So if we are currently using ST 8.0.2 with 8.0.2 FP2 users using just the embedded IM facility in their Notes 8 client, all we need to do is upgrade our users to 8.5.1 FP1 and then upgrade our ST 8.0.2 to ST 8.5 ?

No further servers etc are required ?

Cheers Emoticon

Gravatar Image21 - @20 Assuming you aren't using features like Audio/Video chat then yes.

Gravatar Image22 - Thanks for the info !

Gravatar Image23 - Can you please elaborate on how you would set this up using 2 physical servers and implementing all the features available. Is it the Community Server running on the Domino Server for one physical server and then everything else on the other?

Gravatar Image24 - Understand completely how each technology builds on the previous 'install set'.

However, what if a customer only wants chat and presence awareness, but they would like to have Audio/Video chat too.

They don't specifically want to run meetings per se, only interactive chat with A/V.

Thanks

Mike

Gravatar Image25 - en un servidor secundario quiero poner el sametime 8.5 standard demo.. alguien ya lo ha hecho que me orientara.

de antemano gracias: Rolleyes:
